The Sassafras mountain house has an asking price that could more than double the area’s residential property price record.

A luxurious fairytale-style mountain house among the clouds in Sassafras looks set to charm a $5.9m-$6.49m record price from potential buyers.

Named Abingdon and described as the Dandenongs’ “ultimate trophy home”, the abode listed with the address available upon request was originally constructed by a local builder for his family in the 1960s.

With views of the ocean and the You Yangs, the property’s impressive features include a 110,000L in-ground saltwater pool and custom-built steel archway gates in the semi-formal woodland gardens.

Once indoors, visitors can discover the dining room’s mirrored ceiling, imported wallpaper, European light fittings, six bedrooms and a wine room capable of stocking 300 bottles.

“People start laughing, they say, ‘Just give me a chair and shut the door, I’ll be happy’,” Abingdon’s owner said.

She has renovated several houses across the past 30 years, including Abingdon.

“We completely removed the entire interior and remodelled it, we took it back to the frame,” the owner said.

“Because the whole house looks down across the valley and over the ocean, we put the entertaining terrace right across of the home and everything opens onto the terrace.”

Her fond memories include hosting Christmases with a woodland theme at Abingdon.

“You could have a party for 300 people here and not even notice the guests,” she said.

The owner said she loved the home’s front parlour where pearlescent ceiling paint makes the afternoon sun “glow”.

“You can be in here with the fire going and it’s snowing outside, it’s just magical,” she said.

“We’re 600m above sea level and sometimes we’re in the cloud and sometimes we’re looking over the cloud.

“King parrots fly in all the time and they are extremely tame, in the summer it’s not

uncommon for them to come and sit on the lampshade.”

The kitchen has a 1400mm wide Lacanche enamel double oven (dual fuel range with teppanyaki hotplate), Carrara marble benches and splashbacks, two integrated Miele dishwashers, a Miele warming drawer/slow cooker and fully integrated Liebherr double French door fridge/freezer.

The presence of echidnas and wombats on the 1.09ha site adds to the “fairytale-type existence”.

Bell Real Estate Olinda agent Corinne Sukroo said the house had a “perfect floorplan”.

If Abingdon sells within its asking price’s upper range it will more than double Sassafras’ $3.1m record house price, set by 10 The Crescent in 2020.

CoreLogic records show Abingdon last sold in 2017 for $1.6m.
